Sagittarius is symbolized by the Archer centaur : half-man, half-horse. The centaur symbolizes the Sagittarian's attempt to free itself from man's animal nature, & the development of the human soul. It symbolizes the animal natures and desires of man, as well as its spiritual aspirations. In Greek mythology, centaurs were adventurous, brave, and wise but they were also given to brawling and uncivilized behaviour.
The centaur also represnts Chiron, the supreme healer who was the teacher of the Heroes. The owl represents Wisdom. The lightening flash represents Jupiter, the ruling planet of this sign, & the largest body in our Solar system, signifying expansion.
There was an early confusion between Sagittarius & Scorpio, for centaur figures with Scorpio tails have been found in ancient in Babylonia.
